Closing the Books on 2011

As 2011 draws to a close and we turn up the thermostat and blanket the horses, this is a great time to reflect on the accomplishments that the year brought your way.  Our awards program was full of great moments and celebration of successes that you all enjoyed.  Achievement comes from hard work, patience and endurance. I believe all of you put in hours of dedicated work and enjoyed many good rides and reached goals that you set for yourself.
As we reach for a new calendar for 2012, let’s take a little time to reflect on the year coming to a close.  We have seen ups and downs along the way but the year-end brings anticipation of new opportunities.  Put lessons learned to work, pat yourself on the back for your successes and take a step forward.
My challenge to you for 2012 is to make it a growing year:
    *  Set new goals for yourself and your equine partners
    *  Invite a newcomer to join the NEZ fun
    *  Attend a monthly NEZ meeting --meet new people, add your voice, keep the wheels of NEZ turning
    *  Take on a community service project
    *   Smile and offer a helping hand to someone facing a challenge--be a friend!

I want to extend a personal thank you to all who contributed to the working of the Zone.  The officers, the working committees, the members, the clubs, the show management, and the supporters who helped us all along the way.  Happy holidays to you all and I look forward to working with you all in the New Year.

Janet Edwards
President

News from WSH:

First we would like to congratulate our own Jessie McLaughlin, who was voted as our 2012/2013 Washington State Horseman’s President… Way to go Jessie…

A message from WSH President Jessie:

What an honor and thrill it was to be elected as the 2012 / 2013 Washington State Horsemen President at the Convention last month.  I am truly looking forward to working with the other members on the Board as we continue to make positive strives with WSH.  The website will be redesigned to be more effective and printed communication will continue with the members quarterly through the Canter.  Members of the marketing, membership, and public relations committees continue to find new ways to entice equine enthusiasts into joining our organization and my personal hope is to see at least a 10% increase in membership by the end of 2012.  The Working Horse Division is under development and will bring a new feel to our organization as well.  Please get involved as a member of this great organization whether it be on a club, zone, or State level.  There are plenty of opportunities to serve and if you are interested, please don’t hesitate to contact me at LDSMacs@comcast.net and we’ll find something for you to help with.  Remember…this is YOUR organization.  Let’s take the RIDE together as we continue to tell our story that WSH is Washington’s premier multi-age, multi-discipline association in which the whole family can play together!

Introducing your WSH officers for 2012:

Immediate Past President: Shane Laib~ SC
Executive Treasure: Carolyn Kennedy~   Canal

Reflections on the year 2011
The season did not start well with shows canceling or looking for later dates as show grounds and stables went into lockdown and exhibitors waited for the next report of horses falling ill or even succumbing to a serious and very contagious virus. Eventually shows that could move found new dates or new facilities and things gradually returned to normal. We did lose one show when Appleatchee's two days of Dressage canceled after Appleatchee went into quarantine for an undetermined length of time.

There were, however, four other dates for Dressage and eleven weekends committed to open shows. If you went to every day of every NEZ recognized show in 2011 you would have been at a show for 24 horse show days, figuring in all the multiple-judge shows for the season which ran April to Sept. Some people wish for more a more varied slate of judges. It
Might not be as bad as you think. Those 24 show days were judged by 16 different judges who each had one show.  The remaining 8 slots were filled by four judges who each did two shows. The bottom line: 20 different judges were available to see your horse.
2011 NEZ HSD Class Awards   At the present time the High Score Awards list has131 horse show classes that count for points. This year 84 of them qualified, which means at least two on the books with three rides. The other 46 did not qualify because they lacked entries or rides. Ages can be combined to qualify if necessary.
Out of 105 horses recorded for points this year, 65 qualified for one or more classes and received a plaque. Qualifiers included our three new classes, Green English Pleasure, 1st & 2nd Year Walk Trot,  Limit Rider Western Seat Equitation and Limit Rider Western Pleasure for riders who have not won six firsts in recognized shows In the Equitation Division, sign-ups totaled 57, of which 24 qualified for awards, Showmanship, being the most popular. Of the 78 first place awards, 41 of the winners chose a trophy, 34 chose cash, and 3 chose crystal for their award. First place ties occurred in Advanced Western Pleasure Horse and Trail Horse in Hand, Open. The winners were an Appaloosa, an Arabian, Paint and a Miniature. How's that for spreading it around?
Perpetual and Challenge Awards The Horse Show Division has 41 Special awards. Two new ones were added this year. The Lucky LaChees Memorial donated by Janel Holden in memory of her retired show horse and long time friend. He was a great kid's horse and she wanted him to be remembered for this. So his trophy is Most Versatile Horse, Junior Exhibitor 17 & Under. The Four Seasons Versatile Horse award is now limited to senior exhibitors. Interesting to note, that it has only been won by seniors. The other new trophy is a perpetual for Limit Rider sponsored by Diane Kadel.

Hi All-
Happy Holidays. Have you hit all of the tack stores and gotten your shopping done? We are running out of time. I wanted to remind everybody that winter's cold moisture can be hard on your leather tack. You should set one of your New Year's goals to get your tack cleaned and conditioned by say March. Then it's done before riding season begins.
Our banquet was packed with a full house. It was nice to see most everyone there, although there were some that could not make it and you were missed. I had fun helping give out the awards. I wanted to thank those of you that helped me on the horse shoe awards. Missy & Darrin Stockman, Sharon Kelsey, Frank Ham, and of course, Michael Lyngstad. And my boys, too. A lot of blood, sweat, tears, and a few cuss words were put into those horse shoes and I couldn't have gotten them done so nice without all of your help.
I want to remind you that it is time to get your 2012 dues in. There's a meeting the first week of January and I'd love to see as many as can attend. We will be working with some proposals and it's a great time to get the dues & paperwork in. It's also a good night to get out and see everybody after the busy holidays.
Also, it's time to get show dates in. We already have a good number of shows on the calendar. I know there will be more to come. Let's get the calendar done. We have people working on getting the WSH website all up-to-date. It's gonna be great! Now we can refer people to the website for current information and especially a current calendar of events. I'm so excited!!
Gosh! I cannot believe that 2011 is almost over! There is still a lot to be done before our meeting the 1st week of January. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or need any information. I certainly don't know it all, but I can usually point you in the right direction.
Please remember to keep our Director, Melissa Stockman, in our thoughts as she recovers from a full knee replacement. It's been a long time coming and, as expected, she is recovering really well so far.
Have a very Merry Christmas and a safe & Happy New Year.

Hoofbeats is a quarterly issued news letter, put out by the Northeast Zone of Washington State Horsemen.
Regular updates, Divisions information and forms can be found on the zones website @ northeastzone.org

Look for your Next issue of Hoofbeats in April 2012 … Thank you, have a great New Year!

It excites me that no matter how much machinery replaces the horse, the work it can do is still measured in horsepower.....even in this space age.  And although a riding horse often weighs half a ton, and a big drafter a full ton, either can be led about by a piece of string if he has been wisely trained. This to me is a constant source of wonder, and challenge.
